Reading List

A few weeks ago I asked a few publishers for review copies of their book.  I am now knee-deep in stuff to review.

Which is a good thing. It gives me free books to read, it gives me material to write about for the site, and every once in a while as I read, I get new ideas for writing topics.

This morning I wrote a review for a children’s book: Here You Are, which I’ll publish on the site later this week. I’m currently reading through The Kindness Handbook: A Practical Companion, by Sharon Salzberg. If I finish it early this week, I’ll do a review of it later in the week, if not, I’ll do a review of one of the music CDs that were sent in.

My Current Big Experiment

Weekly Buddhism Issue 4

Weekly Buddhism Issue 4

The first half of the day was spent in finishing up this week’s edition of the “Weekly Buddhism” PDF Magazine. This was a big one, at 24 pages. I especially like the cover design, featuring a photo I took in Hiroshima.  Anyway, the magazine’s posted now and already has several hundred downloads, so that’s done for another week.

This was also the last of the free giveaway issues, and now the grand experiment really begins… will people actually PAY for my Buddhist writings?  There are plenty of subscribers to the free material, and if even 1% of them find it worth subscribing, I’ll be happy.  I think it’ll work out; after eight months of free daily emails and weekly podcasts, my writing style ought to be pretty well understood.  I get messages of thanks almost every day, as well as the (all-too) occasional real donation, so I know people appreciate the writing I do. After eight months of freebies though, it’s time to see if I can make a living doing this.  If not, a serious job-search is likely to follow.

However, I listen to many business-related podcasts, and they all seem to agree that it’s tough “monetizing your content.” People like things for free. Well, I’ll still be doing the podcasts and the Daily Email, and those will always be free. The big question is, in this economy, are people going to be willing to pay for premium information?

The first “for pay” issue will be out next weekend. My fingers are crossed.

New Blogs Launched

Yes, I think it may be time for a new personal blog. I haven’t done “personal” blogging since I finished up in Japan. All that old material is still over at JapanTEFL, and I’m going to leave it there, easily searchable by anyone planning on doing the TEFL thing.

THIS blog, however, is going to be more about day-to-day stuff. I’m currently writing, promoting, and growing several new blogs, all of which are visible in the links on the rights side of the page. A couple of them are brand new and have nothing there yet. Now that I’ve officially linked to them, that’s motivation to get them moving.

As for what I’ve been up to lately, the Daily Buddhism blog is growing more quickly than I ever hoped it would, and the Tao site is purring along nicely as well. I’m publishing a new PDF Magazine called “Weekly Buddhism” which expands upon the material from the Daily Buddhism.

Arcane Tales isn’t doing so well. I’m really getting bored with that one.  It’s extremely time-consuming finding stories that work with that format. For legal reasons, the stories need to be in the public domain, which is no big deal; those are easy enough to seek out.  The problem comes in the length of the stories. In order to read the stories in less than 30 minutes, they need to be around 3000 words, which is very short.  Horror stories in 3000 words published before 1928 are not so easy to find. Originally, the site was going to have Horror, Sci-Fi, and Mystery, but there just AREN’T any stories in the other two categories that fit the needs of the site.  The stories I do find that are short enough are generally awfully tame, and if they bore me, then the audience probably has the same reaction. I might do some more stories for that podcast, but then again, I might just let it fade.

Just yesterday, I set up the Wellness and the Vegan blogs.  I know a bit about Wellness, but know little to nothing about Vegans. Since the best way to learn a subject is to write about it, I thought it would be fun to write about that as I learn the subject.

While I was setting up the files for those two new blogs, I figured, “Why not do something with my own site?” The old site pointed to my three podcasts, but that was all it did. Announcements and updates were inconvenient, and a true blog allows easier updates, if nothing else.

So here it is, my latest.
